Exchange Flows in Tributary Creeks Enhance Dispersion by Tidal Trapping

چکیده

Abstract The North River estuary (Massachusetts, USA) is a tidal marsh creek network where dispersion processes dominate the salt balance. A field study using moorings, shipboard measurements, and drone surveys was conducted to characterize quantify trapping due tributary creeks. During flood tide, saltwater propagates up main channel gets “trapped” in creeks inherit an axial salinity gradient from time-varying at their boundary with channel, but it stronger than of because relatively weaker currents. drives baroclinic circulation that stratifies creeks, while remains well-mixed. Because creeks’ shorter geometries, currents lead those channel; therefore, never fill saltiest water which passes junction. This velocity phase difference enhanced by exchange flow fast-tracks fresher surface layer back channel. Through ebb fresh outflows introduce negative anomaly into advected downstream tide. Using high-resolution we empirically determine resulting its calculate rate trapping. Our larger theoretical estimates neglect Trapping contributes more half landward flux this region.

Tidal modulation of two-layer hydraulic exchange flows

Time-dependent, two layer hydraulic exchange flow is studied using an idealised shallow water model. It is found that barotropic time-dependent perturbations, representing tidal forcing, increase the baroclinic exchange flux above the steady hydraulic limit, with flux increasing monotonically with tidal amplitude (measured either by height or flux amplitude over a tidal period). Exchange flux a...

Tidal Utilization of Nekton in Delaware Bay Restored and Reference Intertidal Salt Marsh Creeks

Large-scale marsh restoration efforts were conducted to restore normal salt marsh structure and function to degraded marshes (i.e., former salt hay farms) in the mesohaline lower Delaware Bay. While nekton response has been previously evaluated for the marsh surface and subtidal creeks in these marshes, little effort has been focused on intertidal creeks. Nekton response in intertidal creeks wa...

Effect of sewage nutrients on algal production, biomass and pigments in tropical tidal creeks.

Microalgal blooms can result from anthropogenic nutrient loadings in coastal ecosystems. However, differentiating sources of nutrients remains a challenge. The response of phytoplankton and benthic microalgae (BMA) to nutrient loads was compared across tropical tidal creeks with and without secondary treated sewage. Primary productivity in the water column was limited by nitrogen availability i...

Tidal Flows from Asynchronous Rotation in Binaries

Asynchronous rotation in binary stars produces non-radial oscillations that are known to cause observable variability on orbital timescales. The horizontal perturbations of the surface velocity fields are referred to as “tidal flows”. In this paper we illustrate the manner in which tidal flows perturb the surface velocity field from that of uniform rotation, using a one-layer stellar model for ...

Hydrochemistry and phytoplankton composition of two tidal creeks in South-Western Nigeria.

As in other countries, the effects of human stressors on coastal areas and waters in Nigeria are increasing, and management strategies are urgent. In order to assess this, studies on phytoplankton composition in relation to physico-chemical characteristic of two tidal creeks in Lagos were conducted for six months (October 2007 to March 2008). Variations in some of the physical and chemical para...
